Fix Chrome Authentication Error (Version 142 and Later)
If you are using Chrome version 142 or later, you may encounter authentication errors when accessing college systems. This is caused by a new Chrome feature called "Local Network Access Checks" that is enabled by default.
What the Error Looks Like
You will see this message: Authentication Failed - Problem in external authentication service
Solution 1: Disable Local Network Access Checks (Recommended)
Follow these steps to fix the issue:
- Open Chrome browser
- Copy and paste this into your address bar:
chrome://flags/#local-network-access-check - Press Enter
- Find the "Local Network Access Checks" setting
- Change the setting from "Default" or "Enabled" to Disabled
- Click "Relaunch" to restart Chrome
- Try accessing the portal again
This should resolve the authentication error immediately.
Solution 2: Downgrade Chrome Version
If Solution 1 does not work:
- Uninstall Chrome version 142
- Download and install Chrome version 141
- Disable automatic Chrome updates temporarily
Solution 3: Use an Alternative Browser
You can also use one of these browsers instead:
- Mozilla Firefox
- Microsoft Edge
Both browsers work without any configuration changes.
